OASIS concert in Amsterdam!

Posted in Music and Film with tags , , , on January 23, 2009 by farrahalmira2

So last night was the night! Me lucky me finally got the chance to watch Oasis live! the weather in A’dam was terrible, as usual..but I didn’t get discouraged at all..way too excited! Met up with Kemal, Chaki and Meity at the Burger King nearby the Heineken Music Hall before heading to the venue. The first thing I did in the HMH was buying a t-shirt of Oasis, lime colored. A British band called Twisted Wheel was the opening act. I was busy pushing myself (and people around me) to get to the front row, so I didn’t really pay attention to the band.

Oasis began their performance at around 8.30pm. The stage was really impressive as seen in the pictures! Me & Chaky could manage to get ourselves to stand really close to the stage, don’t ask how, it was terrible…thus, I could really make some great close-up pictures of Liam & Noel. My camera really did a great job in capturing the moments.

Oasis performed some of their classics such as Wonderwall, Don’t Look Back in Anger & Champagne Supernova (which successfully made me and the audience overly ecstatic).  They also played songs from their newest album, obviously. Noel had to sing some songs to cover Liam, as he just recovered from a severe throat condition. Good that they didn’t cancel the concert as they did in Dusseldorf only two days before. But hats off to Liam, he could still deliver a great performance. All in all, Oasis performance last night was a blast. I enjoyed it big time :) Here is a short video of Champagne Supernova from last night.

…BUT DON’T LOOK BACK IN ANGER…I HEARD YOU SAY!!
(Sorry..couldn’t make it ’til he finishes the lyric, my camera’s memory was low)

Slumdog Millionaire

Posted in Music and Film with tags on January 10, 2009 by farrahalmira2

The story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. (IMDB)

I loved every scene of the movie (even the typical Indian dancing scene in the end), perfect casts, perfect cinematography, ah perfect perfect!! You just gotta watch it yourself!! I wouldn’t be surprised if Slumdog Millionaire sweeps Oscars 2009, including the Best Picture. Ah we’ll see..the nominations will be announced in 2 weeks.

Madagascar 2: I (kinda) like to move it-move it!!

I ‘ve always been a big fan of Madagascar! But the sequel has failed to impress me. Madagascar 2 sure is funny, but maybe I put my expectations way too high in the first place. It’s just not as amusing as the first one. The penguins steal the show, but the character of the grumpy old granny is painfully annoying. I particularly like the scene where Alex confuses Marty with another zebra. All in all I give it a 7 out of 10.

SATC The Movie. Me likey!

Posted in Music and Film with tags on June 18, 2008 by farrahalmira2

SPOILER-FREE!

After years and years of waiting, I finally watched Sex and the City the movie last Saturday with Akbar, Chaki and Kemal. The tickets had already sold out when we arrived in Pathé de Munt. Smart enough that we booked it a few days in advance. Anyways..the cinema was indeed full of groups of girls dressing up a la SATC. I am not going to write my very own review of this movie, as I still have piles of works to do today. But this is what the Daily News has to say about the movie, which I totally agree on!

“It’s three years and three books later for quintessential New York writer Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), the central figure around whom friends Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), CharlotteKristin Davis) and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) revolve. Carrie still loves Big (Chris Noth) and they happily split time between his and her apartments while searching for Manhattan’s Holy Grail – the perfect abode for two. Marriage, it appears, has never entered the equation. (

Miranda is settled in Brooklyn with husband, Steve (David Eigenberg), and son, Brady. Upper East Side fixture Charlotte is mom to adopted daughter Lily, and Samantha has relocated to Los Angeles, where she spends her time managing the publicity for boyfriend Smith (Jason Lewis), a hot commodity in Hollywood.

With characters now 40 and older, story lines no longer hinge on getting into the latest bar or obtaining the “it” bag of the moment. Michael Patrick King (who shoulders directing and writing duties) wisely centers the story about matters of the heart. After finding true love – as all four women had in the finale of the hit HBO series that ran from 1998 through 2004 – what comes next? Anyone who has watched the film’s trailer knows that Carrie and Big find their dream apartment, and all of a sudden, a wedding seems the right thing to do. Disaster, of course, looms just over the horizon. Not only for Carrie, but everyone in the group.

Miranda and Steve reach an impasse in their marriage as Charlotte worries over her miracle pregnancy. Over on the West Coast, Samantha can’t seem to reconcile her love for Smith with her unease at being absent from the city she loves most. There’s also the sexy neighbor ready to test Samantha’s monogamous state.

The film’s initial awkwardness quickly disappears as King and his leading ladies quickly hit their stiletto-shod strides. Throughout, the four women turn in sensitive, solid performances – what you would expect from a cast totally familiar with the territory. Parker and Nixon shine particularly bright.

The real joy of “SATC” as a movie lies in the return of all those things that mass television syndication has stripped from the series in the intervening years. The “Oh, my God, they did not just do that!” moments, the nudity, the swearing, the unabashed love of human frailty and downright wackiness. Snappy, verbal sparring punctuates the laughs and more than a few shed-a-tear moments.

There’s still sex, except now it’s not “how big?” or “where?” but the age-old marriage conundrum of “how often?” And the city? Sure, it has changed since 1998, but who can argue when Samantha shouts down a Gotham naysayer with, “Old New York, new New York, it’s still f—–g New York!”

Costume designer/stylist Patricia Field fills every scene with enough labels to keep any fashionista salivating. Rightly, though, the majority of label lust is left to Carrie’s twentysomething, fresh-to-the-city assistant Louise (Jennifer Hudson in a pivotal plot role).

Will love conquer all? Is age only a number? Does Samantha sleep with her hot neighbor? I’m not telling. But just like any great night out with best friends, “Sex and the City: The Movie” is awash with so much love that it lingers long after the last cocktail runs dry.”

In short, I LOVED it! Although the movie was long, I didn’t get bored even for a second. And I was totally blown away by the plot and the emotional ups and downs of the characters. The audience clapped their hands and cheered when Charlotte shouts “I curse the day you were born” to Big. I am not exaggarating, I actually got teary at one point of the movie..haha! I didn’t mind the over-the-top product placement, I think SATC the movie was very entertaining! ****

Quickie Express

I watched an Indonesian movie called Quickie Express last weekend. It was played in the CinemAsia Film Festival 2008 in Rialto Cinema Ceinturbaan, Amsterdam. The screenwriter, Joko Anwar, also attended the event. The story is about a poor 27-year-old Jojo (Tora Sudiro) who couldn’t do anything right even in his simple job. After a few job changing, he got recruited to become a gigolo in a club called Quickie Express. The story flows from there. Overall, this comedy movie itself is a fun experience, with some very funny moments. The concept of the movie is unique, and the cinematography, like most of Joko Anwar’s movies, is great! The two-hour movie successfully makes me laugh, and not only once or twice, but several times. OK there are some tasteless jokes and unnecessary scenes, but maybe such corniness are needed to make the movie “memorable”. I personally dislike the twin sisters scene, bah, corny. But I was totally impressed with the performance of some of the senior casts, such as Ira Maya Sopha, Tio Pakusadewo and Rudy Wowor. Also, Tora Sudiro, Aming and Lukman Sardi are a perfect trio for the movie. Overall, I give 8 out of 10 for QE. I paid 7.5 Euros for the admission ticket, and it was worth every cent. Also, I was fortunate enough to chat with Joko Anwar in person for a few minutes after the movie. He was really nice and friendly! Bravo to Joko Anwar and to QE director Dimas Djayadiningrat! Hope to seeing more of their great works in the future!

Glenn Fredly in The Hague.

Posted in Music and Film with tags , on April 5, 2008 by farrahalmira2

Two thumbs up for Glenn Fredly!! His concert last night in Paard van Troje, The Hague was really entertaining and full of energy! The concert that lasts for about 2 hours was such a sheer joy to watch from start to finish. Amongst the songs performed were Januari, Akhir Cerita Cinta, Sekali Ini Saja, You’re My Everything, Kisah Romantis, High and Dry, Let’s Stay Together, Most Beautiful Girl in the World, and many more. Glenn was really friendly towards the audience. He even asked a female audience from the crowd to come to the stage. Embarrassingly, an uninvited female fan climbed up the stage even faster than the other girl, resulting in a series of hilariously awkward situations. Glenn was singing and dancing with the invited girl whilst the saxophonist was politely playing beside the uninvited girl. In the end of the song, the uninvited fan refused to leave the stage. She was holding to Glenn tightly, ignoring the booing audience. Finally, the securities solved the problem. .haha! All in all, the concert went smoothly. My salute to Glenn and his super-talented band! Thanks to Kemal, Chaki, Bacum, Teri and Meity for giving me and my boyfriend the tickets! We had an absolute great time! Below you can enjoy a short footage of Glenn singing You’re My Everything. Click here if you want to see more pictures of last night’s concert.
